Magic Mushrooms Let's Talk

Magic Mushrooms Let's Talk

Posted by Chamomile & the Sage on

Naturally occurring psychedelic substances such as psilocybin (magic mushrooms) have been used for their beneficial health effects for thousands of years. Now with the Colorado's natural medicine health act of 2022 we can start having these conversations out in the open. We can share our experiences and knowledge with one another, mushrooms are one of the most powerful plant allies!

One of my favorite ways to work with this plant ally is micro-dosing, this approach has gained significant popularity for its ability to improve mood and mental health. Micro-dosing offers numerous benefits, ranging from increased creativity and focus to enhanced well-being and mental clarity. I have many of my trauma resolution clients working with this medicine while being guided in somatic trauma resolution to help aid them in their healing journey.

Micro-dosing means that you are ingesting a very small dose of psychedelic mushrooms. This dose micrograms where a typical recreational dose is grams. The objective is to experience the therapeutic benefits without the psychedelic effects.

Psilocybin, the active compound in magic mushrooms, interacts with the serotonin receptors in the brain, leading to altered states of consciousness.

An observational study published in the Nature-Scientific Reports found that people who micro-dosed psilocybin saw small to medium sized improvements in symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress over a 30-day follow-up, compared to those who did not. In a 2019 study, researchers collected the baseline measures of 93 participants. Participants were instructed to follow a specific micro-dosing protocol and submit daily reports. The study found a significant increase in measures of connectedness, contemplation, creativity, focus, happiness, productivity, and wellbeing. Long term measures were taken after 6 weeks of micro-dosing. Significant reductions in depression, stress, and mind wandering were sustained and reported.

CONSIDERATIONS AND PRECAUTIONS AROUND MICRODOSING

Individual Variability

Effects of micro-dosing can vary significantly. Factors such as dosage, personal biochemistry, and setting can influence your experience. It is crucial to start with low doses and work with an experienced practitioner so you can carefully observe individual responses.

Legal and Ethical Considerations

The legal status of psilocybin mushrooms varies across states and countries. As of 2023, it is no longer a crime in Colorado for adults 21 and older to possess, consume, and share psilocybin. When working with a practitioner you are making a donating for their services.

Potential Risks

While mushroom micro-dosing is generally considered safe, there are risks associated with any substance use. Possible side effects include headaches, tummy discomfort, and mood fluctuations.
